ARTIST STATEMENT

As an Artist & Architect, I believe in the inherent elegance of vernacular structures, the iconic nature of the archetypal barn, silo and grain elevator made up the landscape of my childhood growing up in Colorado. The overwhelming sense of openness, a continuous ribbon of a horizon line punctuated by a simple manmade form are what shaped my character. These are the memories which continue to intrigue me and which I draw upon.

My works are evolving studies of the rural landscape, exploring ideas of scale, juxtaposition, mass, immateriality and movement. Working in cast bronze, cast glass, steel, wood and ceramics, I am passionate about materials and try to bring out the inherent beauty found in each. A simple form with a gabled roof is found in a lot of my work, it is the most basic representation of ‘barn or home’ –often precariously perched or appearing to be in movement. Typically they are a reference to the transitory nature of such structures and our disappearing rural landscapes.
