TEAPOTS: HANDBUILDING & THROWING TECHNIQUES
Intensive workshop with Doug Casebeer
Sunday, August 10th, 2025 | 9AM-5PM with lunch break
$125 Members | $150 Non-Members | Intermediate experience required
This one day workshop and demonstration will focus on the parts and pieces of a teapot. There will be multiple methods presented for constructing spouts, handles, lids and forms. Techniques will involve handbuilding, press molding, throwing and extruding parts for completing teapots. All strategies can be used for making other types of pottery and sculpture.
Shana Salaff lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, and teaches Ceramics at Front Range Community College in Fort Collins. Originally from Toronto, she received a Diploma in Ceramics from Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1998. She became a studio potter for 7 years, running Wareshana Pottery in Halifax, and then received an MFA in Ceramics from California State University, Fullerton in 2009. Shana also writes for Pottery Making Illustrated Magazine and presents papers at the Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association National Conference.
ADDING HANDBUILDING TO YOUR THROWING SKILLS
Weekend workshop with Shana Salaff
Saturday & Sunday, October 4th-5th, 2025 | 12-6PM each day
$175 Members | $225 Non-Members
Some ceramic experience required. Light lunch provided each day.
Students will learn methods to alter thrown forms, to make handbuilt forms from templates, and will play with adding handbuilt or thrown elements to vessels. Students will also get a chance to experiment with Shana’s colorful cone 6 glazing!

Work may or may not be fired, the focus of these introductory classes is to familiarize participants with the process of throwing on the wheel.

Whether you’ve been trying to get your hands on clay for years, want to test the waters before committing to a several-week class, or just crave an afternoon/evening out of the house, these 3-hour adult workshops are perfect for learning the basics and opening your eyes to the possibilities of clay. You will walk out with a better awareness of the processes and craftsmanship that goes into ceramics.
Introduction to Wheel Throwing will cover centering, opening, pulling, and finishing your clay piece on the potter’s wheel. Introduction to Handbuilding will cover making objects through pinching, coiling, and/or slab construct. After the workshop, CCC will clear glaze any creations made to keep. All works will be ready for pickup two weeks after the workshop.

ENROLLMENT POLICY
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. A student will only be registered for a class upon receipt of tuition payment in full. We cannot guarantee placement into a class until payment is received. Materials and firing fees are included in the tuition.
CANCELLATION POLICY
To cancel a registration and receive a refund, you must notify the CCC at least 7 days before the start date of your class. We will refund your payment minus a 10% cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than 7 days before the start date of the class. In the event that the Clay Center is forced to cancel a class, a full refund will be issued.
