ARTIST STATEMENT

Lori Dresner’s Menagerie series brings together a collection of saucy characters embedded in sculptural ceramic vessels and wall art. Like cave paintings from hundreds of years ago, roughly sketched figures and creatures tell stories that play with what is whimsical and what is real.

The ceramic work is created with simple line drawings etched into the surface of smooth white porcelain using a technique called Mishima or inlaid slip. As the characters emerge, so do the stories and the backgrounds. Lori’s variety of shapes and forms are an evolving canvas for illustrations that are always changing. Her illustrations are painted with under glaze and finished with transparent glaze.
