LEVI ADAMS

BIOGRAPHY

Levi Adams was born in Maine, USA in 2000 to a military father whose career moved his family all over the country and the world. Currently pursuing a BFA at Northern Arizona University, Adams began his relationship with clay based on a clerical error that placed him in a ceramics class in high school by mistake. Adams’ work is predominantly high fire, and often fired in atmospheric conditions using wood or soda kilns.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Smarter, better-studied people have put to words better than I could what makes a visually appealing pot. And I would agree that there is a standard for making a visually remarkable object–a rule of balance/design that a good potter must understand. While not in remote command of this rule, I do strive to make “good” pots. For me, good pots are beautiful in design and expression, but they also tell people to use them. If I pick up a mug and don’t immediately wish to fill it with a hot drink and sip from it, it’s no good. Part of what makes a pot able to say such a thing is subtlety. A good pot does not distract from its function, and this is what defines much of the traditional pottery that I revere. Ultimately, in my efforts to make good pots I am happy to be a part of a tradition that one day I hope to be credited in furthering.
