Jeremiah Ibarra
BIOGRAPHY
Jeremiah Ibarra grew up in San Angelo Texas, where his family nurtured a passion for clay. He was exposed to the San Angelo National Ceramics Competition, a biennial exhibition that continues to invite a robust communal affinity for the craft medium. Jeremiah went on to pursue a MFA from Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi where he worked with Louis Katz. In 2017, he was fortunate enough to attend the Art and Philosophy Seminar at the American Academy in Rome with Amber Scoon. His passion for art and clay has afforded him the opportunity to do several residencies and exhibit around the country.
ARTIST STATEMENT
As it happens, I am increasingly enamored with clay, and consequently the objects we choose to make from it. Pots, for reasons I find difficult to explain, continue to plunder through my daily thoughts(and yes, I do mean daily) like some sorta cookie monster stumbling into a quiet southern pastry shop. As artists we tend to anthropomorphize the objects and materials we work with and pots, for better or worse, well, they’re alway talking. They’re always asking too much and never enough. They whisper just quiet enough so you can’t make out what they're sayin’. And when you do manage to catch a glimpse of what they're mouthing it’s like hearing some serious chisme from your neighbor’s grandma. There’s often an untimely parley between the surface and the wall of a big ol’ bucket or whatever pot you’re thinking of right now. I’m always thinking of buckets. The process? It always involves such unfriendly, fickle and down right dirty activities. And the steps! Don’t get me started on the steps, good gravy the steps are endless! Though, like some sort of response from Saint Anthony himself, every once and a while you’ll find a shape worth repeating, and that’s nice.
