ARTIST’S SHOW STATEMENT
“Clay is just thick paint, and paint is nothing but thin clay.” -Peter Voulkos
Unknown Territory is an exhibition showcasing the work created throughout the last nine months by Trae Story, the current Carbondale Clay Center Resident Artist. The works included in the show consist of small to medium scale sculptures that explore ideas of identity, materiality, accessibility. While some of the work comes from a preceding concept, the wall pieces are meant to be three-dimensional paintings that are made intuitively with no end result in mind. Blank rectangular forms (blank canvases, so to speak) are strewn with holes, appendages, and marbled color. Several motifs reference stories that are repeated throughout the work, some of which are more or less implicit than others. The ideas that may or may not seem obvious create a syntactical relationship with the less conceptual abstracted works through the use of a restricted color palette of flesh tones.
