ADULT POTTERY & CERAMIC CLASSES

I have no clay experience.  I have taken a few classes, but it was years ago. I have little understanding of the difference between coil build, slab building, building with molds, or throwing on the wheel.

I have taken several clay classes. I feel comfortable enough in clay to be able to make basic forms.  I have some knowledge of clay related terminology but am looking to have a better understanding. I am comfortable working independently.

I have taken several clay classes within the past several years. I feel confident working with clay but am looking to expand my knowledge and skill set.  I am confident working independently.

SUMMER 2024 INDEPENDENT STUDY

The Independent Study program is intended for intermediate/advanced ceramic artists with considerable clay experience who do not need instruction. Each individual will receive a half-shelf and a first come, first serve sign-up calendar for studio time shared with the adult session students. Independent Study is for self-paced artists who wish to practice and produce work with little to no guidance in the studio. Independent Study has a specific start and end date for a fixed rate regardless of when you can start or if you need to end early. Should you wish to take up a full shelf rather than a half shelf, you may purchase a quantity of two half shelves at checkout.

Dates: June 3rd - July 25th, 2024 | Glaze Week: July 28 - August 3, 2024

Requirements: Must have taken at least 1 intermediate/advanced level class at CCC

Price: $300/half shelf | Firing fees included | Clay not included

*If you have not taken an intermediate/advanced level class at CCC and are confident working independently or have outside experience, please contact programs@carbondaleclay.org. Please note that if you register for independent study and we find that you are unqualified upon review, your registration will be cancelled and a refund will be issued less a 10% cancellation fee.

THROWN AND ALTERED

Tuesdays, 6-8:30PM, June 4th - July 23rd (No class July 2nd) | Glaze Week: July 28th - August 3rd, 2024

This class will combine an emphasis on throwing pots of many types (cups, bowls, cylinders). Once pieces are thrown they will be modified by any of multiple methods, for example: cutting, faceting, paddling, pinching, adding attachments and so on. Making pieces which will be more interesting (hopefully) than the basic thrown forms will be our goal.

Instruction will consist of hands on coaching with each participant regarding throwing skills. Of course, there will be several demonstrations of alteration ideas and methods. Students should expect to be challenged to create interesting functional forms that are unique. We will try to avoid “regular, round pots” in favor of developing creatively altered and unique pieces. Consideration of slips and glazes for these altered forms also will be explored.

Instructor: Frank McGuirk
Level: Intermediate/Advanced

ROOM FOR GROWTH - FLOWER VASES

Part #1 Summer Session: Wednesdays, 6-8:30PM, June 5th - July 24th | Glaze Week: July 28th - August 3rd, 2024

Part #2 Fall I Session: Wednesdays, 6-8:30PM, August 11th - October 2nd | Glaze Week: October 6-12th, 2024

How do we design pots to best fit their intended purposes? How do we merge design and functional considerations in order to make vessels that are fully realized through use, while simultaneously holding their own even when empty on the shelf?

This two-session (14 instruction weeks) class will address these questions through an exploration in designing and constructing vessels for floral arrangement. Students of all levels can come and learn basic wheel and hand building techniques with a focus on creating their own flower vases. Sketching, discussions, a local field trip, and in-class arrangement with live flowers will be included.

*Students must be able to commit to all 14 weeks of this class over the Summer and Fall I Sessions in order to register*
